How can your writing influence and change the people who read it? Do you write professionally or as an amateur? Discover three easy methods that can help you move your audience and write better.
The purpose of amateur writing is just to write. This doesn’t enhance the world, generate commercial opportunities, or inspire their audience to take action, even while it might produce a ton of meaningless content or provide them personal satisfaction.
What then is the purpose of excellent writing, and how might it alter the way you present? In whatever they write, professional writers have one primary objective in mind: to change their audience. Proficient authors endeavor to enable their readers to adopt new perspectives, behave in novel ways, and modify their interactions with the outside world.
The majority of the blogosphere is proof that anyone can string words together to construct a sentence, but writing for transformation is a skill that is necessary if you want to genuinely influence readers with your writing. It’s the distinction between being interesting and convincing and just being informative. Writers can achieve transformational writing in three easy steps: The three steps are: 1) writing for a particular readership, 2) selecting and carrying out the appropriate type of transformation, and 3) all three.
- Target Audience
It’s imperative that you comprehend your audience, go outside of your own perspective, and write from their point of view if you want to connect with them. Identifying my target audience is a first step I take with every item I write. This includes determining factors like age, gender, race/ethnicity, location, income level, shopping patterns, hobbies, abilities, interests, and more.
I’m ready to adjust the message to appeal to each individual when I know who I’m speaking to. Words like “revolutionary,” “cutting-edge,” “fresh,” or “in vogue,” for instance, are likely to connect more with the 18–25 age group than the 60–70 age group, who are more likely to appreciate items that are “proven,” “safe,” and “sensible.”
- The Proper Location
When I refer to “venue,” I mean the platform—such as magazines, newspapers, journals, books, radio and television commercials, blogs, websites, etc.—that is utilized to deliver your message. Your audience will, for the most part, dictate the location you select.
The ideal publication for a long essay on monetary policy, for instance, written for academics and economists, would most likely be a scholarly magazine. Long passages of important material are difficult for most people to read on a computer screen, and most periodicals won’t give me enough room to present my point. However, a newspaper piece can make sense if my content is clear, short, and meant for a large readership.
Everybody is exposed to textual messages that they either skim or disregard, but if the same information is provided in a format that they find more enjoyable, they are far more likely to be read thoroughly. Using the ideal platform for our topic matter and target audience is essential when writing for transformation.
- The Appropriate Conversion
Transformations can be classified into three categories: know, feel, and do. A knowledge transformation aims to provide readers with fresh information or previously learned material presented in a novel way, enabling them to gain new insights and understanding in ways that transform their lives and viewpoints. A do transformation aims to persuade an audience to take a very precise, direct, and concrete action, whereas a feel transformation clearly aims to arouse great emotion in the audience.
When they see this list, amateurs attempt to complete all three; pros, on the other hand, concentrate on one and master it, as it impacts the others. When someone reads your message, how do you want their life to be different? What do you hope to happen to them? What is it that you want people to know, feel, or act upon? Choose one task, and one task only, and do it well; the others will take care of themselves.
You need to understand how to write for change if you want your message to genuinely make an impression. Determine who you are writing to, reach them at the appropriate place, select the appropriate alteration, and carry it out skillfully. Ultimately, the only writing that merits reading is transformational writing.
